Q: Why do so many men dodge the headshot update for years?

A: Because the average man has been told “look natural” by a photographer his entire life — and “look natural” turns out to be impossible advice. So he tenses up, the photo looks stiff, he hates it, he avoids the next session for another two or three years. The 2mm Method™ replaces “look natural” with specific, coached micro-adjustments: chin forward two millimeters, jaw down, eyes alive. You don’t think about looking natural. You execute small physical cues. The result looks effortless because the photographer carried the cognitive load, not you. Camera-shy men leave with portraits they actually like — usually for the first time in their adult life.

“I’m not photogenic” — the 2MM Method™ fixes that

If you’ve been dodging the headshot update for years because you “hate having your picture taken,” this one is for you. Real-time coaching of the two-millimeter eye, jaw, and posture shifts that turn camera-tense into camera-confident — even for clients who arrive convinced they’re un-photographable.

After 30,000+ people photographed across DFW, we have yet to meet a client the 2MM Method™ does not work on. Camera-shy welcome.

The Camera-Shy Man’s Coaching Session

Most men who walk in say some version of “just so you know, I’m not photogenic.” We hear it weekly. Almost nobody who says it is actually un-photogenic — they’re tense. The 2mm Method™ session is structured to dissolve that tension within the first 5 minutes: real talk while we light, no posing instructions you can’t decode, no “smile naturally” gaslighting.

You’ll see your frames on the tethered 4K monitor in real time. The moment you see the first one that looks like you on a good day — and it usually happens in the first 10 frames — the rest of the session becomes easy. Most men photograph 4-6 keepers in under an hour. Many surprise themselves. Almost all come back two or three years later for the refresh.

What to Wear, How to Prep, What to Skip

Practical, opinionated guidance from 20+ years photographing executives, founders, and professionals across DFW.

The Jacket

A well-fitted modern sport coat or suit jacket in navy, charcoal, or mid-grey. Avoid loud patterns, shiny lapels, or jackets you outgrew during the pandemic. Shoulder seams must sit at your shoulder, not on your bicep.

The Shirt

A clean white, light blue, or subtle pattern button-down with a properly sized collar that frames your jaw, not strangles it. Iron the collar. Pressed look is non-negotiable for executive frames.

The Tie (Maybe)

Lawyers, financial advisors, and traditional-finance executives usually keep the tie. Most others should skip it. If you wear one, choose a solid or subtle texture — no shiny silks, no novelty patterns. Open-collar reads more confident in 2026.

The Haircut

Get the haircut 5-10 days before the session, not the day before. Day-of haircuts look freshly clipped on camera. A few days of growth photographs more naturally.

The Beard

Whatever you normally wear — keep it. Trim a day or two ahead so the line is clean. Photographing well isn’t about being clean-shaven; it’s about looking like yourself, not a stranger.

The Hairline

Receding, thinning, or fully bald — we light it correctly so it looks intentional, not lit from above. Bald reads as authority in 2026. Don’t avoid the camera over the hairline.

Glasses or No Glasses

If you wear them daily, keep them. Bring an anti-reflective coating if you have one; we’ll also light to eliminate glare. Some men shoot both — glasses on for the corporate frames, off for the LinkedIn warm-tone shot.

The Day-Of

Sleep. Hydrate. Skip the heavy lunch. No sun the day before (red ears photograph badly). Show up 5 minutes early so you don’t arrive flustered. That’s it — that’s the full pre-game.

Men’s Headshot FAQs

I’ve genuinely never liked a single photo of myself. Will this be different?

Yes — usually. After 30,000+ people photographed, we have not met a man the 2mm Method™ doesn’t work on. The reason most of your past photos didn’t work is photographers told you to “smile naturally” or “act yourself” — directives you can’t execute. The Method gives you specific, easy-to-follow micro-cues. The result is photos that look like you on a good day, not a stranger.

Do I need to shave?

Only if you normally do. Photograph as the man you actually are — clean-shaven, stubble, full beard, mustache. Whatever your colleagues recognize you with daily is the right look. Just trim a day or two ahead so the lines are clean.

My company has a dress code that’s more casual. Can I shoot in a polo or sweater?

Absolutely. Tech, creative, healthcare, and many DFW companies skip the jacket entirely. A clean fitted polo, a textured Henley, or a quality merino sweater in a solid color all photograph well. Match what your customers, your investors, or your clients see you in day-to-day.

How long will the session take?

45-60 minutes for an individual session. That includes the introduction, lighting check, expression coaching, multiple frames, on-screen selection, and going through wardrobe variations if you brought any. You’re in, coached, and out in well under an hour.

Should I shoot at the studio or on location at my office?

For individuals, the NRH studio is fastest and most controlled — clean backdrops, no co-worker interruptions, easy parking. For teams of 4+, the mobile elite studio comes to your office. Either delivers the same coached look. See our locations.

Will the photo still look like me — not “filtered”?

Yes. Our retouching philosophy is “you on a great day” — not a stranger. We even out skin, brighten eyes, remove temporary blemishes. We don’t reshape your face, melt your jawline, or AI-render you into someone unrecognizable. When you walk into the meeting after the photo, people should still know it’s you.

Stop dodging the headshot update.

Coached. Lit. 45 minutes. Photos you actually like. The 2mm Method™ was built for the man who’s been putting this off.
